Outpainting

Outpainting extends an image beyond its original boundaries. The AI generates new content that matches the existing image's style, lighting, and composition, effectively expanding the canvas in any direction.

When to Use Outpainting

• Change image aspect ratio from portrait to landscape or vice versa
• Add context around a subject — show what's outside the frame
• Create wider compositions for banners, headers, or panoramic crops
• Extend backgrounds for video or animation projects

How to Access

Select an image node and click the Outpainting button in the node toolbar. The tool panel shows direction selectors and an optional prompt field.

Direction Controls

Choose which edge to expand: left, right, up, or down. You can expand multiple directions in sequence or all at once if the tool supports multi-direction selection.

Each direction expansion adds a configurable amount of pixels. The default is usually 25% of the original dimension, but you can adjust based on your needs.

Prompting for Outpainting

For best results, describe what should appear in the newly expanded area. A prompt like "a continuation of the forest path with sunlight filtering through trees" guides the AI to generate content that feels like a natural extension.

If you don't provide a prompt, the AI infers the content from the pixels at the image edge, which works well for textures and patterns but may drift for complex scenes.

Workflow Tips

• Expand incrementally — small extensions produce more consistent results
• Start with one direction at a time to maintain control
• Use a descriptive prompt for complex scenes
• After outpainting, check edges at 100% zoom for seams
• Run a light inpaint on the seam area if needed
